Introducing a Non-Surgical Technique for Dissolving Fat

Slide23We are proud to announce the launch of Kybella, a revolutionary new non-surgical way to melt your neck fat.  If you have ever wished that your profile was more sculpted, or that you simply had a more linear shape to your neck, then you will be excited to learn more about this new procedure.

As one of a select few centers nationally to offer this product and one of only two training sites in Colorado, we look forward to taking facial rejuvenation to an entirely new level.

Slide10As we age, the shape of our neck changes and we lose the sculpted angle of youth as fat accumulates and our skin becomes more lax.   In the past, the only options for addressing these changes were surgical and required a certain amount of downtime.  For patients with good skin quality, liposuction was often a good option but was a surgical option.  For those patients with more advanced skin laxity and separation of the muscle, a more aggressive approach (such as a neck lift) was often recommended.  But while these options often achieved very positive results, many patients were not interested for the simple fact that both options required surgical intervention.  To address this, some practitioners began offering their own combinations of fat dissolving acids (called mesotherapy) but there was often little rhyme or reason as to the combination of various acids in the mixture and the results were highly variable.

To address this lack of reproducibility and to increase the overall safety of the procedure, researchers began working on the development of a product that was not only effective but one that could also reduce the risk for adverse events.  After years of research on literally thousands of patients nationwide, they arrived at Kybella.

Slide15Treatment is performed in the office and generally requires anywhere from 2-6 treatments depending upon the amount of fat being dissolved.  Each treatment takes approximately 30 minutes and is associated with minimal discomfort.  In the study, researchers used a variety of methods to reduce discomfort ranging from topical ice or numbing cream to local injection of a numbing agent.  Patients were also given a light over-the-counter pain medication such as Advil which seemed to be very effective in reducing pain both during and after treatment.  Most patients did develop localized swelling and so treatment is recommended at a time when you can afford to be swollen for a few days following your procedure.

According to a recent study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, as many as 68% of consumers are bothered by fullness to their neck.  Over the last few years, in my practice we have seen a huge demand for contouring of this area from both men and women.  Whether this phenomenon is related to the growing use of social media “selfies” or is simply reflective of more patient education across the board, this trend appears to be growing and, for many practices, is an issue for which we have not had great options.

Slide04The youthful neck is defined by a number of criteria as seen to the left.  When these criteria are not met, our neck can make us look older than we really are.  For some people, changes to the neck are affected by the aging process while for others their necks were really never as sculpted as they wanted from the beginning.  Whatever the cause, by dissolving fat outside of the muscle (referred to as “post-platysmal” fat) and tightening the overlying skin, a more sculpted and youthful appearance is attained.

Slide22If you think this procedure is just for women, think again.  We are seeing a growing number of male clients seeking neck rejuvenation to help them look more youthful.  A more sculpted neck and jawline is often seen as contributing to a more refreshed appearance and in several studies has been associated with a greater sense of well-being as well as a boosted level of confidence.
