Many of us work to maintain healthy habits for our hair, skin, and nails. But aside from visual cues, how do you really know if your hair is healthy or not?
We are born with approximately five million hair follicles—but our bodies do not grow more hair follicles over time, so it’s in our best interest to keep them healthy.
Unfortunately, we often notice poor hair health only after it’s clearly visible. That may change in the future thanks to research at Massachusetts General Hospital, where they are working on new ways to measure the health of individual hair follicles.
Can magnetic fields tell us about hair health?
The new technology being tested by Massachusetts General Hospital is called “magnetotrichography,” and it allows scientists to measure the magnetic field surrounding your hair follicles. Essentially, it maps out the electrical activity present along your scalp to determine if follicles are functioning at an optimal level. Follicles that aren’t working at a healthy level won’t exhibit much (or any sign of) electrical activity.
This information can be used in a few ways to determine hair health and the necessity of intervention.
Electrical activity might be used to predict if and when follicles will fail, in addition to the extent of hair loss you can anticipate. This information could also provide some insight into effective options for follicle stimulation and treatment.
While it’s not yet widely available, magnetotrichography is a promising development that may in the future help individuals know if they should seek early, proactive hair loss intervention.
